Fishing Report updated July 3, 2009. The prime time to fish here is all summer – well not quite, but since we fish three areas there is usually somewhere to catch salmon and halibut. Most recommended times are : December to May for the feeder Chinooks and some halibut starting to show in Ucluelet around mid May May – July for Halibut in Ucluelet and large numbers of Chinook(King) salmon.(they run all summer). July 15 – September 10 in Ucluelet for large Kings July, August and September for Coho in Ucluelet Ucluelet has been very hot the last few years and is expected to continue for this year. If you are trying to decide what time in the summer to come, any time between May and September is good. While June, July and August are peak months, September and October can still see good action as well. Many people are concerned about catching fish, so one thing to note about Ucluelet is that it is not like some other areas that have really slow times and really good times. We have a large area to choose from and there are so many fish travelling past, that you almost always have a good shot of a good days fishing, whether coming in May, June, July, August or September. Fishing has been good both offshore and in protected water. The great thing is that you don’t have to get up early to have a good catch! Sorry to disappoint all you early birds! Southbank continues to be a place where you can go out and get doubleheaders all day. I attribute most of the great salmon fishing here to large amounts of Needlefish and Sand lance in the area. Most of the Chinook here are 5-15 pounds with the odd one over 20. 4-5 inch coyote spoons are working well here. Barclay Sound has also been good and we have been doing very well about 15 mins from the harbor at Great Bear and Alley Rock. All of the fish pictured June 22 are from Great Bear and are between 15-30 lbs. This trip produced 90lbs of fillets for six Chinook(Kings). We are finding that there are bigger fish in close to shore. On the days we fish for halibut, we generally are getting smaller salmon, but the days in close to the rocks are producing some great size Chinook (Kings). If you are fishing inshore it is best to use smaller spoons (4-inch) and needlefish hutchies. Come enjoy fishing that only some people dream of! Outlook for 2009: We expect a great summer for Chinook(Kings), Coho(Silvers) and Halibut. The Department of Fisheries have a good forecast for 2009 and we had a great showing of Chinook and Coho late in the season which together make a good sign for next year. Ucluelet was the most consistent on the west coast from Vancouver Island to Alaska from all reports we heard for Chinook(Kings). We had a very successful 2008 and expect more of the same for 2009. I would expect with the economic downturn people will come load up on salmon and halibut instead of going on a vacation with no return! Well tight lines! Halibut Fishing Report: Halibut fishing has been consistent—but not quite as fast as it can be. Most of the time we are getting our limits, but they are not biting every minute like can happen when fishing is good. Right now we are catching halibut mostly by trolling glow spoons or hutchies near the bottom. A little view of the mountains while going out
