Fishing Report updated May 12, 2010. The prime time to fish here is all summer – well not quite, but since we fish three areas there is usually somewhere to catch salmon and halibut. Most recommended times are December to May for the feeder Chinooks and some halibut starting to show in Ucluelet around mid May May – July for Halibut in Ucluelet and large numbers of Chinook(King) salmon.(they run all summer). July 15 – September 10 in Ucluelet for large Kings July, August and September for Coho in Ucluelet Ucluelet has been very hot the last few years and is expected to continue for this year. If you are trying to decide what time in the summer to come, any time between May and September is good. While June, July and August are peak months, September and October can still see good action as well. Many people are concerned about catching fish, so one thing to note about Ucluelet is that it is not like some other areas that have really slow times and really good times. We have a large area to choose from and there are so many fish travelling past, that you almost always have a good shot of a good days fishing, whether coming in May, June, July, August or September. Ucluelet, BC Right now…. Sprout Lake Loggers Salmon Derby March 6,7 The 27th annual Sprout Lake Loggers fishing Derby March 6 and 7 was a great success. The top 3 places were 29 lbs 5 ounces, 27 lbs, 23 lbs 8 ounces. The top place broke the prevous record of 27 lbs. Often this time of year, the derby winner is in the teens, but this year there were at least 14 Chinook weighed in over 20 lbs. March fishing generally brings much smaller feeder Chinook than this, so this is a great sign confirming predictions that we are going to have one of the best years ever for LARGE Chinook! Chinook were taken all over Barkley Sound and there were over 450 tickets sold. We will have pictures coming soon. General Report There wasn’t too much different to report from week to week the last few months. The salmon were biting pretty consistently in around Great Bear and Alley Rock, but a few days ago the salmon fishing slowed down there. The weather has been much nicer the last few days and then therefore we have been able to head offshore in search for salmon again. Our guide Dan the Man found six nice Chinook between 12-18 lbs off Big Bank during his last trip. In a year where we are expecting great numbers of salmon to be passing by in May, June and Early July, we know that if the salmon are not close to shore, they will be around somewhere. While fishing offshore this time of year, it is usually rewarding to stay close to the bottom when fishing for salmon. You will also pick up halibut here which is always a nice bonus. Generally glow hoochies and spoons work well for both salmon and halibut. We expect the fishing to stay very strong during May and June, so make sure you beat the crowds! May can hold some great fishing around Ucluelet and we are seeing it this year.  Close to a million King salmon should pass by Ucluelet During May, June and early July heading to rivers nearby. We are getting prawns and crab as well on our 6 hour and 8 hour trips. Early season fishing often get a more diverse basket of seafood and the salmon are closer to shore, so this makes early season trips a great deal for any hungry fisherman. Crab fishing is often best in April, May and June. 4 nice salmon between 12-19lbs April 10, 2010 A guest from Germany on his vacation, April 11, 2009 Mary primeau, Breanna primeau and Brian dowell April 16, 2010 Prawns caught April 16, 2010 Dungeness Crabs caught April 16, 2010 Trevor and Kimberly Athmer on their honeymoon April 29, 2010 Trevor and Kimberly Athmer May 1, 2010 Rosie Williams with a 25 lb Halibut May 10,2010 Morris Doyle, Rosie Williams, Shawn Evans, Pat Young with 6 Chinook May 10,2010 Chris Kyle, Luke Lambard, Kelly wright, Lark Lambard, David Brown with 8 Chinook May 11, 2010 Related Posts: June 2009 Picture Blog August 2009 Picture Blog June 2008 Salmon and Halibut Fishing
