Madrid and it’s Entrono for Carp Fishing

I have been fishing for Carp in Madrid now for quite sometime. As each year passes, we see progress and bigger fish being landed. It’s fair to say that Madrid has at least 7 venues now with 40lb carp in. All of which are good and bad for wild and varied reasons. Some of them have no or limited access, others are policed too much, the others are large waters with many small fish. One of the better lakes in the city a small park lake I am very fond of. I can say this for several reasons but the main one being that it has some cracking fish with a good average weight of 24-28lb. Actually I have never caught a fish smaller than 20lb for the lake. It also has to my surprise Comizo barbel. These fish have been put in by a man I met last weekend while fishing the water. The chap told me in the morning he had put these fish between 6lb and 9lb in the lake. About 2 hr. after he told me I went for a walk around the lake and spotted two of these barbel in the crystal clear water, they looked happy enough, and interestingly enough they were not part of or staying with the carp which were also near by. It’s therefore possible that Carp and Comizo dont mix perhaps as much as say Tench and Carp, but don’t hold me on that one, like everything these things need a little more time to study. During the session I managed to winkle a fish out, it fell to a Mainline Tutti Frutti 15mm Pop-up cast on it’s head at short range early morning. It was nice to see the rod rip off with no alarm (I had switched it off), when I was playing the fish I thought it was an old friend of mine Quasi. Quasi the upper 20lb Carp I have now had a couple of times. He’s an obvious fish because of his form. As it turns out and as we suspected this fish was actually another one. You could call him Papa Quasi as he’s a little bigger than the other. At a pinch over 14.5kg (31lb 09oz), I was happy to have him in. He was my first fish of the year from the lake and a welcome one. You can see from his shape in this photo that he’s a little malformed. Seems that perhaps he has had an incident with a pike way back. One of the locals Diego did the photos for me. Actually while talking with Diego it turned out that he has a beautiful house for sale on the banks of the lake. I was invited into the house to see it and I have to say it’s something else. I am waiting for more info. and photos from him. When I have them I will post up here on the blog the photos and full specifications of the house. It’s an ideal place for an Angler to retire in Spain. It would also be the perfect house for a guide to set-up and fish the water. As I know it comes with 6 bedrooms and plenty more. For someone looking to get into Madrid on the back of a fantastic lake with fish to 50lb. This could be a ideal. Well, I must run now, I have the next magazine to close and lot’s to do. May the fish be with you.

Carp Journeys – Available May 2009

I Just had the news confirmed that my 3,000 plus word chapter about carp fishing in Spain will go into the next edition of Jason Riders books on Carp. The story I provided entitled ‘The magic moment’, was about the capture of a 40lb plus Spanish mirror carp (not the fish in the photo). The 40lb fish came from a magical park lake at the foot of the Sierra in Madrid. The lake is a place where I have spent time with new friends and lovers. It’s a magical place very dear to me. The story is a sentimental one, and one I wont forget. In these times a 40lb plus fish may not seem big, but it’s one thing catching a 40lb plus fish, it’s another finding one in the capital of Madrid. As time passes these fish will again become more and more common, as possibly they were in the past, but with the not so long ago attitude of catch and kill being exercised through Spain, few fish manage to get to this size in and around the captial. Being the Editor of the only carp fishing magazine in Spain, I get to know what does get caught around here. I can tell you, I am one of a few who has caught a fish of this size from a Madrid water in some years. The full account of what happened and some of the other spectacular Spanish carp I caught along the way can be read in the book which should be available to buy not long after May 21st. 2009 from this website: booksoncarp Contents word count 1. X-ray fishing wins at Octoplus

Mark Stevens an industrial radiographer from Tipton has won the fourth qualifier of PartyPoker.com Fish ‘O’ Mania at Octoplus Boldings in Bridgnorth on Saturday 25th April and is now in with a chance of receiving the jackpot £25,000. On a day that started showery with a cold easterly wind, expectations for the sort of weights this venue had been producing during the preceding weekend’s matches were low, with many thinking that the winning weight would be in the region of 50 to 60lbs. However, the Tipton angler threw these suggestions into disrepute as he fished a perfect match to land 95lbs 14ozs. The Willis Worms backed angler, who was fishing only his second ever PartyPoker.com Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier, drew Hawthorns peg number 15 and pole fished at 14.5 metres to an aerator. Using 2.5 pints of Castor and 1/3rd kg of worms, he caught F1’s and Carp steadily throughout the match with his biggest return proving to be a 4lb carp. Commenting after his winning performance, Mark said: “I knew the venue really well and had one a match at Boldings only the week before. Les Thompson who fished the final last year is my travelling partner, so I know Cudmore quite well having sat behind him on the day.” Some distance behind Mark, was runner up Antony King who was lucky enough to draw one of the fancied pegs, fishing number 11 on Stock Pool. However, the Macclesfield angler couldn’t capitalise on his draw ending with 87lbs with his biggest fish being a 10lb Mirror Carp. The engineer alternated between 11.5m and 13m, fishing casters up in the water behind a tree stump, catching an impressive 30 F1’s, plus three Mirror Carp. This was Antony’s first ever PartyPoker.com Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier, and if he continues to fish like he did at Octoplus then he may be able to turn his second place into first in the future. Accompanying Antony King on Stock pool was well known angler and PartyPoker.com Fish ‘O’ Mania regular Jeff Moors from Northwood near Stoke on Trent who finished in third place. Fishing both pole and waggler he caught F1’s and Mirror Carp, using 3 pints of maggots in the process, to record a weight of 74lbs 10ozs. Both Stock pool and Hawthorns proved to have the most in form lakes on the day with fourth place being taken from peg number seven on the latter by Wirral angler Jamie Hughes. The Merseyside match man finished with a more expected weight considering the conditions of 62lbs 15ozs. Fishing two pints of pellets shallow, Jamie landed all carp with his most successful strike weighing in at 6lb. Octoplus Boldings in Bridgnorth was one of the three new venues used in this year’s competition and it proved that it was the day that relative newcomers to PartyPoker.com Fish ‘O’ Mania had the most success. Fifth place on the day was landed by another novice, Tony Walsh of Halesowen in Birmingham. The Mosella Black Country angler caught all F1’s feeding 3 pints of maggots and 1kg of worm to land 62lbs 6ozs. Source: Angling Trust Fishing News

Angling Trust presses case with Euro Fisheries Commissioner Borg

Officials from the Angling Trust and the European Anglers’ Alliance met today with Fisheries Commissioner Joe Borg at the European Commission in Brussels to discuss the review of the Common Fisheries Policy and to raise concerns about the proposed regulation of Europe’s 10 million recreational sea anglers. Joe Borg said at the meeting, and in a letter being sent to all European angling organisations, that the Commission’s controversial Article 47 regulation of fisheries is not intended to impact on recreational sea angling and that the regulations are to be limited to cod and blue-fin tuna which are under relevant recovery plans. He stated that the purpose of the regulation was not to impose restrictions or bureaucracy on shore or boat anglers who were not themselves catching significant numbers of fish. He went on to say that if regulations were warranted, they would be lifted in the event of a recovery plan being successful. However, despite these assurances, the Angling Trust stressed that there was still considerable uncertainty remaining about the definition of recreational sea angling, and raised concerns about the sheer weight of bureaucracy the regulations could create. The Angling Trust representatives, which included Chief Executive Mark Lloyd and Marine Committee Chairman Stuart McPherson, also raised the following issues with the Commissioner: The importance of data about recreational sea angling which is collected scientifically and can be trusted by everyone involved. The need for clear definitions of recreational sea angling. Concerns about the impact of bag limits, in particular those based on weight, on recreational anglers. Clarification of whether the regulations would apply to individual anglers or boats. The impact of the regulations on the significant UK charter boat industry. Whether or not the data control regulations would apply to all recreational sea anglers in respect of stocks subject to recovery plans. The importance of recognising that recreational sea angling is a sustainable activity, because it has a negligible impact on habitats and anglers return immature fish alive and well to the sea. The fact that recreational sea angling supports many local economies and has considerable social benefits. The Commissioner asked the Angling Trust to provide input into a definition of recreational sea angling and offered continued dialogue on the other outstanding issues. Angling Trust Chief Executive Mark Lloyd said of the meeting, “it was a positive discussion in which we were able to impress on Commissioner Borg the fact that recreational sea anglers have a negligible effect on fish stocks and that any attempt to impose bag limits would be met with resistance by many recreational sea anglers in the UK.” Marine Committee Chairman Stuart McPherson added, “We achieved our main aim in making sure he was aware of the enormous importance sea angling has to the UK economy and that excessive regulation, or the imposition of quotas, would have a direct impact on local communities. We also made clear the view, backed up by various surveys, that recreational sea angling has far more economic importance in the UK than commercial fishing.” The Angling Trust also held meetings with civil servants and MEPs during their visit to Brussels.
