North Carolina’s Fly Fishing Trail Growing in Popularity
Image by robjcamb via Flickr Stringing together more than a dozen wide rivers, medium-sized creeks, and small streams and actually paying attention to the needs of anglers who want a fly-fishing-only experience seems like an obvious way to boost local tourism. North Carolina’s success with the idea is a model for communities that have great fly fishing resources — like the Smokey Mountains — but haven’t yet organized to do things as simple as putting free, waterproof maps in the hands of visitors. In this week’s news release, the Jackson County Tourism Authority announced that in the first 12 months of trail’s existence, they had distributed 14,000 trail maps and received more than 21,000 visits to its website, www.FlyFishingTrail.com .
