Yellow fish from Israel !

Yellows in the Jordan River. We have two types of yellowfish here smallscale ( Damascus barbel ) and largescale. Both living mostly in Jordan river. ( Israel ) Largescales are very common here up to around 2-3kg, caught well on lures (not many flyfisherman here). Smallscale is not taking lures at all, but taking flies quite well. I had a luck on a weekend and caught a good size one. Next time I’ll try and send you a largescale on a fly (untill my last visit to South Africa I was fishing for them on a lure). Best regards, Arthur

Ducks, Ducks and More…

I seem to spend most of my time travelling to Mawgan Porth to fish matches these days but the fishing has been terrific and I just cannot leave the place alone! The good thing about it is that the fishing is different on most occasions, the fish are obviously the same but the approach has to vary depending on the conditions or amount of anglers on the lake. The fish do not just jump into you keepnets and it does take some working out. There was a reasonable turnout for a recent Tuesday open with 16 anglers all hoping for a flyer to spend their day on and I was no exception. I had my dip in the bag of dreams and out came peg 9. Not a bad peg but it was the first time I personally had seen it in this year so I had no form to go by, The peg is situated next to the bridge that leads to the island and it immediately makes you put your thinking cap on as to how to approach it. There are so many options you could easily confuse yourself! Spoilt for choice I decided on a margin line to my left and a main line at a top kit and short four straight out in front of me plus a backup line towards the weed at five sections, hopefully that would be enough to go at. My plan was to feed two swims leaving the weed swim unfed until I needed to go there, personally I find it too difficult trying to feed three swims at the same time, especially when catching plenty of lively carp. My bait for the day was two pints of Garlic micro pellets, four pints of 4mm fishery pellets along with some 6mm hookers. I am convinced that the micro pellets help to hold the fish in the swim, others say they attract the skimmers. Personally I think if you are going to be bothered by skimmers it doesn’t matter what you feed! Wayne’s in town On the whistle I fed the margin and went straight out in front of me potting some micros and feeding some 4mm pellets, the carp were there and within a minute or so I was getting indications. I raced to about 15 fish and then noticed that I was waiting for a bite. Perhaps this was going to be one of those days when a much lower winning weight was going to be needed. Wayne Panting was opposite me on peg 37 he had a very slow start which is unusual for him; he is an excellent angler that normally takes the place apart on his annual two week sabbatical to Cornwall. I asked him what was happening as I could see very little from my peg. He told me it was really quiet and the only person that was catching was Pete ‘The Paste’ Rickett on peg 5. Rotating my swims kept a few carp coming but it was definitely slower than normal. It must have been very slow on peg 6 because after 90 minutes Harry decided that it was time for an early bath! And for the main course? After two hours I had tried all my chosen swims and very little was coming from any of them. The line by the weed was really disappointing with only a couple of fish coming from there. Mind, the ducks liked my pellet and just wouldn’t move. Perhaps they are French ducks with a penchant for garlic? Personally, I would like them served in another French delicacy and smothered in orange sauce! I had to search around for some fish and eventually settled on a new line down by the bridge as there seemed to be some carp hiding under the bridge. It was a bit of a tussle getting some of them under control but at least some were finding the keepnets. Bank walkers were slowing things down today, especially the margin swims a few anglers were struggling and decided to have a wander round the lake for a chat with their mates. And another thing! My swim was getting slightly stronger, the bridge proving to be the best part for winkling a few out, that was until there was an hour to go when the guy on peg 10 also had had enough and packed up. It happens, I have done it in the past not been able to catch much and left early but what annoyed me is when he tipped his fish back, my swim died for 20 minutes or so! There was really no need to empty his nets as they belong to the fishery and had to stay on the peg! Oh man I hate it when that happens. The match drew to an end and it proved a close affair with ‘Pete the paste’ beating me into second place by 6lb! Never mind, mustn’t grumble there is always next time. 1st Peter Rickett, peg 5 121lb 12oz 2nd Stewart Lister peg 9 115lb 6oz 3rd Wayne Panting peg 37 108lb 15oz 4th Glyn Jones peg 15 100lb 7oz 5th Brian Andrews peg 36 94lb – 14oz Saturday saw a few turn up at Trewaters but sadly not enough once again to make it a Angling Times qualifier, I cannot believe that we cannot get 10 anglers out on a Saturday morning, where have all the anglers gone? I was in a bullish sort of mood in respect of my fishing and was adamant that I wasn’t going to fish the thod, nor was I going to fish the dollop! (The method feeder or the paste!) Brave, considering both methods have been taking all the coin recently! My thinking was that there was only a few fishing and I wanted to fish the match in a way that I enjoyed fishing and that meant some of my gear was staying in the van! Draw master Wayne I asked Wayne Panting to pull my peg as I thought he had a good drawing arm! He didn’t disappoint finding me peg 26 I like the peg but the recent poor result in the pair’s festival was still playing on my mind! Wayne however proved my theory by drawing himself peg 19 two end pegs in two dips that’s the way to do it! A quick précis I am not going to spend too long on the fishing side of things as this was another lesson learnt for yours truly! The island was solid with the water colouring and fish sucking at the vegetation so the thod would no doubt have been deadly. The corn and pellet approach down the side just didn’t work for me with only a few carp and F1’s coming to that method. Skimmers and a few F1’s obliged on the 5m pole line and my banker of fishing shallow just did not work. I cannot grumble as I had around 35lb of mainly skimmers which really made for a pleasant days fishing but I was plumb last! Andy Partridge was opposite me and he was in a similar mood finishing just above me with 40lb he is a grand master at the corn down the edge so I know that I didn’t do it too wrong. Pete ‘The Paste’ Rickett showed us how it should have been done by fishing the method for a few fish before changing to his favourite method fishing the dollop down the edge finishing up with an impressive 90lb to take the match and some more SW coin! Please draw me…. Tuesday came and I was back at Mawgan Porth I was running late as I had a couple of deliveries to make before fishing, so I telephoned and asked Janet to ask someone to draw for me. She jokingly asked which peg I wanted and I replied 47 would do! I arrived at the venue and was met by Wayne Pantings father with the news that I was on peg 46 I just couldn’t resist telling him off saying I asked for 47! I have not been on the island for awhile, and I really fancied the peg. When I got there it looked great and there was the odd one swirling which got me itching to have a day shalla! Tackle was quickly assembled but i wanted to keep my options open in case I had read the swim wrong. I set up a J3 float for fishing at 3m on the deck the float was made up on Cralusso .20 main line and had a .18 Cralusso hook length. The shot was all bulked just above the knot around 5’’ from the hook which was a Preston PR36 with a F1 micro band. I had a similar float for the edge swim which was close to the bank to my right. I also set up three shallow rigs on J13 floats with exactly the same line and hooks as above. Elastic wise I have settled on J Range hollow purple and black. Fantastic sport The whistle went and my first fish was landed within seconds and was taken on the drop at 3m! More followed and I caught loads on the deck but was getting loads of indications when I started foul hooking them I started feeding slightly heavier a little further out. Going down the edge for 20 minutes provided some more fish but I wanted to catch shallow and was soon enjoying myself getting a fish a chuck! It was brilliant fishing and with three hours of the match gone I was averaging 45 fish an hour . I could hear Paul Gallagher behind me on peg 47 catching well and I felt we were close, Paul was fishing the margin to his left and was landing fish very quickly on his top two. He doesn’t count his fish so I was unable to really gauge how close we were but it made me keep my head down for the duration of the match finishing with 225 fish, who needs the gym when you can get a work out like that, all I have to do now is work on the rest of my body! There were some fantastic weights and I was really pleased to record the highest weight of the year with 274lb 3oz followed by Wayne Panting with his personal best on the water of 247lb 6oz from peg 42, Paul Gallagher made it a trio of double tons with 200lb 15oz Paul Gallagher taking fourth spot with 128lb from peg 40 New Best My highest weight didn’t last for long as Wayne returned for the following days match and he drew peg 6 and he recorded a stunning 284lb I just wish I could have been there to see it. Well done mate that is a cracking result. It is made all the better in my book as Wayne is confined to a wheelchair; he certainly doesn’t let his disability get in the way of his sport. Weekend off It was a fishing free weekend for me as the turnout at Trewaters didn’t warrant a match and we cancelled on the day when only three turned up! I decided to have a family weekend and really enjoyed it. I am now contemplating taking the whole of August off to recharge the batteries ready for a September and the start of autumn fishing. I was back at Mawgan Porth for the Tuesday open and I was really pleased with my draw of peg 8, it is a peg that I highly rate as you have plenty of room even when there are a few on the lake. Tackle wise was my normal set up I hoped to get them shallow but we have had a lot of rain and obviously the air pressure had changed to a low, so there was a possibility that they would stay on the deck. This was one of those matches that you have to really work at and I had to break my normal rule and have three swims on the go. I could catch some to my left margin and a few out at 3m and also some by the weed at 6m but I could not get more than four or five from one line and it was a case of swopping and changing. I could see Harry on peg 41 also working his swim and catching from several lines his fish also looked to be bigger! I know they always look big on someone else’s peg but that end of the lake is notorious for the bigger samples. Those pesky ducks! The water fowl were driving me quackers today they would just not leave me alone. Apart from a couple of loners I had two families that were in my swim looking for a free meal. They were adamant about sitting and diving on my 6m line next to the weed, I just could not move them! The problem was this was becoming my most productive line! In the end I was sort of feeding four lines which made it hard work. I had to feed another line at 6m to my left wait for the ducks to go halfway to get the feed and then feed my weed line which would bring them back I was like a whirling dervish throwing pellets everywhere and playing carp as well. The ducks were getting dizzy swimming backwards and forwards and not getting anything. There was definitely too much energy used in this match. In the end I finished second with 179lb 15oz which I was pleased with but I do feel those ducks cost me as they definitely disturb the carp when they dive plus they move the weed around and you cannot keep fishing in the same place. Still mustn’t grumble too much! I’m afraid I did though; I told Janet I was bringing an airgun to the next match and was going to be loose feeding garlic favoured lead pellets! Harry won the match with just short of 200lb and the top five all recorded weights in excess of 100lb so it was another good match at MP. 1st Harry Billing peg 41 195lb 10oz 2nd Stewart Lister peg 8 179lb 15oz 3rd Paul Gallagher peg 42 137lb 9oz 4th Wayne Panting peg 128lb 1ozs 5th Matt Gallagher peg 38 102lb 11oz Next week apart from Mawgan Porth I am fishing a double header at the Barns fishery with one match on each lake it promises to be a good one. It will make a nice change as there is some varied fishing on offer with the possibility of some big weights of silvers to be had.

Recently retired Carlton College president Rob Oden writes about rainbow hatcheries, the liberal arts, and tenuous connections to the wild . “When Spanish anglers happen to catch a stocked rainbow trout, they know what to call them. Mimicking the most recognizable line in cinema’s ‘The Graduate,’ fly-fishermen in Spain call rainbows ‘plasticos.’” In the Toledo Blade .
