Permit: A Biblical Foray Continues
Susan Cocking, I am convinced, is a very good angler. I first met her in Key West almost 25 years ago, when she was already steeped in fishing culture. Which makes the continuing story of her failed attempts to catch a permit all the more poignant. “Amid feeble tides and chilly winds and waters on a recent Saturday, I actually got a small permit to eat my fly . But, of course, I didn’t catch it. Matter of fact, I never even saw it. Here’s what happened…” From McLatchy Newspapers.

Carp Fishing Tips That Will Help You Catch More Fish
It’s hard to know exactly what makes the difference between catching a carp and not, but we know it can be frustrating when you spend an entire day with no bites, so we’ve put together a few tips for successful carp fishing. One good tip is to look for quieter areas as this is where carp often cluster – if a lake is fished too often, carp associate it with danger and so look for alternative locations to feed. This is because they need to feel safe in their environment.

Anyone For Fishing?
It looks like everybody in my part of the SW has Christmas on their minds and are saving their money rather than going fishing. It certainly seems true in the midweek matches as they are just not supported at the moment. On Tuesday four anglers turned up at Gwinear and on Thursday only three at the Barns! I went to the Barns expecting a few more and when I found there were only two others I nearly went home! I was persuaded to fish, after all I had got my gear ready and travelled there, and in any event a day’s fishing is better than a day’s work! So we had a three man winner take all. Green eye I must admit the on the previous Thursday I was envious of Tyrone Hull, he fished the waggler on the next peg to me. He didn’t have a great deal but watching that Cralusso Rocket Light flying towards the far bank, had me thinking about it all week! So that was it decision made! I set up two rods one waggler and a straight lead and I was content to do that right or wrong! I had an enjoyable session finishing with around 30lb of carp and a few Tench. I think I could have had some more, but I was convinced I could make the maggot work and fished it for the first couple of hours. It was the wrong choice as I could not get the feed near enough to the far bank, oh for some sticky mag! I rather hoped the grubs were going to draw the carp three quarters over but they didn’t want to play. Changing to 6mm pellet was the answer, but even that came with its problems. The weather had turned milder and the constant feeding brought the carp well up in the water, I was absolutely plagued with liners. I really should have set up a pellet waggler and fished it between 12’’ and 18’’ deep including the length of the float but in the end I just persevered with my waggler practice. Whilst I was enjoying myself on the running line Roy Booth was emptying the lake on the pole! He finished with around 65lb of Carp and Tench. Mark Lazell who is starting to get a new nickname of ‘8 mil’ due to the fact of that’s all he ever uses on the hook finished with around 45lb again taken on the pole. Low turnout at Gwinear Saturday came round and again a very disappointing turnout at Gwinear, only six anglers turned up, you can hardly call it a match! I was hoping that at least 10 would have made the effort, at least then it would have qualified as a County Championship match, never mind mustn’t grumble. We decided to fish on two lakes and pay the top two to make it interesting. I had my dip and came out of the bag with peg 8 on Phase One, not a bad peg or so I was told. I setup two pole rigs to fish long, one slightly to my right in around 6’ of water and the other slightly to the left where it was around 10’’ shallower. I also had a rig for fishing in around 4’ of water at 6m at an angle. The last thing that was setup was a very small cage feeder with a 5gram feeder weight attached. I was going to cast this randomly around the swim hoping to find some carp, the small weight helps to accurately cast the feeder to the far bank if needed to go that far. At the start some chopped worm was fed long to my right and a few micros and expanders to my left. I had 30 minutes without an indication on the tip and was finding it difficult just sitting there waiting! The pole was too much of a temptation so I had a look with a worm head on the hook, It was a bite a chuck the problem was they were very small Perch and the occasional 4oz Tench. It was going to take an awful lot of them to catch up with the 10 pounder Chaz Ward had just landed to my left! A look on the expander wasn’t much better with a couple of small F1’s and some more Tench, I did foul hook and loose two carp on this line so I had a little hope. That was dashed as every time I looked over my right shoulder Chris Hancock was playing a carp on Phase three. He indicated that ‘8 mil’ was catching even quicker and a glance over to him confirmed the fact. Oh man I was going nowhere very fast! Old Style I changed my rigs around and decided to fish old fashioned winter Gwinear match that is a hard 6mm pellet on a hair rig and pinging the odd pellet at the float. This worked as I managed 6 carp but they were not the 6 pound plus fish I needed. I actually gave up when ‘Mark 8 mil’ went to get another keepnet with two hours to go! For the latter part of the match I fished the feeder and prepared a few things for Sunday’s individual winter league. I managed a carp and a couple of skimmers but in the end tipped back less than 20lb. And the winner is…………… It would have been nice to know who won the match but in the end it had to be called an honourable draw between Mark and Chris who both weighed 65lb odd, they failed to write the exact weight down and each couldn’t remember how many ounces they had. Oh man, you just couldn’t make it up! A proper match at last! It was really nice to see anglers turning up for the third round of the individual winter league at White Acres; once again we had over forty fishing! It really is a good turnout these days; I hope it continues throughout the winter months. In today’s round all fish counted and Twin Oaks, Trelawney and Jennies were in the bag of dreams. There were a few pegs I fancied and to say I was pleased with peg 16 on Twin Oaks would be an understatement! It was one of the areas I had been thinking about; I just hoped it would fish! Driving down the lane to the lake I tried to concentrate on how I was going to approach the match. The fact is there are loads of silvers in that lake and I had loads of casters with me, I was pondering on trying to catch a few carp early on the method and have a dedicated two hours on the silvers, followed by carp at the end. By the time I parked in the car park I had made my mind up, it was Carp or bust! It was a good draw I had to try and do the peg some justice and fish solely for carp, hopefully catching enough to get good points and get a bit of weight advantage in case any places come down to that, at the end of the league. There would be plenty of time to fish for silvers when the carp shut up shop later in the winter. Carp tackle Horlicks—Just-add-pellet Tackle wise I set up two method feeder rods that were clipped up so I could fish tight to the far bank, I was going to use micro pellets with pellet on the hook but also had some maggots as a of change bait. I dampened my micros on the bank and added a handful of Horlicks to help them bind. I had a giggle to myself as I opened a new jar of Horlicks and read just add ‘micro pellets’ instead of the actual words hot milk! I wondered if back at the factory the directors in a board meeting were slapping themselves on their back, congratulating themselves at their new found sales for the bedtime drink! I had two identical rigs for the long pole both .5gram Cralusso Capri’s they each had an olivette, a size 18’s PR36 hook to a .14 Cralusso hook length. I plumbed the swim at 14.5m and then plumbed back towards myself until I found where I could fish the same rig, this was at 5m at the bottom of the shelf, a really good line on most commercial waters. The last rig was for the edge, a 4 x 10 J1 with a size 16 PR36 hook. Ready with 10 minutes to go I was hoping that I had it right! Here we go On the whistle I immediately started with the method and a 6mm pellet on the hook and was hoping for an early carp. A few had been topping so I really expected a couple of early fish, but it didn’t happen! Phil my neighbour on 14 was the first to catch, followed by Harry Billing who was on peg 8. In fact I think everybody had one reasonably early except me! With 30 minutes gone the tip moved a couple of inches and I could not stop myself lifting the rod but after a short battle the fish came off, probably foul hooked. On the 40 minute mark I had my first proper bite and soon had a 3lb carp in the net. It made me feel better but I felt I was well behind two or three other anglers in the section. Twenty minutes later I was still on one fish and was thinking about silvers! Out on the long pole I had been feeding pellets by catapult since the start so it was time to fish the pole. I fed a cupful of pellets in a circle on my 5m line and then went out to 14.5m with a 6mm pellet on the hook, the float settled and went under it caught me by surprise and I missed the bite! I dropped in again but this time I was concentrating and after a couple of minutes it went under. It is a really nice feeling when you lift into the bite and a metre or two of elastic shoots out of the pole! A nice common was the culprit. The next hour was really good and I had at least seven more carp and a perch of around 2lb that took a liking to pellet! After that spell bites tailed off and I had another go on the method, I had seen some activity on the far bank swim where I had been feeding the odd pellet. I just could not buy a bite and honestly thought the fish were backing off the feeder so I had a quick change to the straight lead but that didn’t work. I was starting to kick myself for not bringing a waggler rod with me as I am sure a few fish would have come to that method, in fact Tony Williams and Tyrone Hull further down the section had caught a couple on the pellet waggler. Back on the pole but this time at 16m and I managed a couple more carp before they seemed to back off again. I did manage to lose two or three but they were definitely foul hooked. It is a difficult situation, after each one I changed the depth slightly but it didn’t make any difference. Just what do you do? The float is dotted, it goes under and you strike, another foul hooked fish! I hate foul hooking fish but I just tried not to get wound up by it and drop back in straight away and tried catch another! With 90 minutes to go I could not get a bite, so I tried a new line also at 16m but as far left as I could reach whilst staying towards the middle of the lake. Within 10 minutes I had a better mirror of about 7 pound from this line followed by a few more! I actually finished the match with 16 carp, a nice sized Cornish F1 and a roach for 73lb 9oz which was good enough to win the match! It really was a good match for me but that first hour was very worrying! Harry was second in my section with 53lb 10oz. Andy Patterson won Twin Oaks high numbers with 62lb plus from Paul Carpenter who had 37lb 8oz. On Jennies Wayne Evident better known as ‘Wrong Lake’ stormed to a section win and third place overall with 58lb from peg 16, Man, when that boy draws the right lake he can pluck a good un! Over on Trelawney I was pleased to see that Whistling Billy Arch was top dog with 47lb. It is good to see him back on the bank fishing, back in the summer he had a problem with his ticker and was away from active duty for a few months! Well done Billy nice to see you picking up the folding! Sweet success Question. ‘When is a Mars bar not a Mars Bar?’ Answer. ‘When it’s given by a Cornishman!’ Now, to the main part of the event and the small matter of the Mars Bar challenge with Steve. Well as I won the match, I naturally won the challenge. But that Steve is trying to claim that he is impoverished and he couldn’t afford a Mars Bar! He actually bought a pack of three cheaper bars and gave me one of those in lieu, shame on you Steve! I had to laugh though, as he bought a cheaper pack of three last week as well. He gave me one and saved the other two for later prizes. He stored them in the glove compartment of the courtesy car that he was using; during the week he gave the car back and forgot to retrieve the booty! It really would have been cheaper to buy the real thing mate! After three -rounds the league has changed a bit, still early days though. No open matches for me next weekend as it is the start of the winter festival at White Acres which I am really looking forward to. So I will be back in a couple of weeks with an update on that festival. In the meantime keep those strings tight!

Book Review: "The Long Slide"
The narrator in Blair Oliver and Peter Soliunas’s detective novel The Long Slide is a bamboo rod aficionado and his friend is a “muckraking environmentalist.” Together they live and work in a Colorado mining town where the “curative” waters are tainted. Nathan Harper reviews the book for High Country News . ” The Long Slide is packed with ideas, but its serious themes of family and heartbreak are leavened with an eccentric supporting cast worthy of a Coen Brothers movie , not to mention an occasional gunfight.”
