Blankety Blank!
Match 5 of the White Acres individual winter league soon came round, and with a week’s break for Christmas and the New Year following this match, it would have been great to put a few more pounds on the scales and a few more points on the leader board! It had been relatively mild in the days leading up to the match, and I like a few of the others thought we were in for a winter treat. The weather had been awful for most of the country, with record low temperatures resulting in cancelled matches due to frozen lakes and canals. We were feeling a little smug with ourselves in the knowledge that the Newquay area had been frost free for nigh on a week. That smugness soon left us when we turned up and found the majority of the lakes frozen solid again, the temperature had nosed dived over night, and left Clint with no option than to re peg the match where there was no ice. High Bank please! The icy conditions around the Cornwall and Devon border had prevented a few from making the journey to White Acres but 24 anglers had managed to make it. There was to be a section of 8 on Twin Oaks and 16 on the match lake. As I stood in the queue, I was hoping for a peg on the infamous High Bank, peg 25 would have done nicely as the skimmers seem to have taken up residency around that area. Even though this round was carp included, I figured 30lb would be a good weight and I fancied it could be done with silvers. I had my dip and out came peg 24, close enough you could be thinking, well normally it might be but on this lake peg 18 is next to 25 and 24 is completely on the other side of the lake! Oh man, mustn’t grumble the peg can be a good one, I drew it on the first round and recorded 45lb to win the section but since then the current form of the peg was poor. In the recent festival it won the section on the first day and then produced one fish or blanked for the rest of the week! That said I went to my peg full of confidence and fancied it for a few fish. There are so many options on this peg; I quickly set up tackle to cover the majority of them. I settled for a carp line at 16m in the deep water and a skimmer line at 13m. Cralusso Capri .75g floats were used to cover these swims. I had a couple of J1 4 x 10 floats for the margins where I hoped to find some of those VIP’s, very important perch, the edge did look very clear so I wasn’t that confident on that line. I also had a SPRO picker rod set up so that I could cast around a straight lead or ‘T bag’ hoping for a carp or two. A chill wind As we were setting up it seemed to be getting colder but that was more likely due to the wind that was picking up and was blowing straight into my face! Sometimes I do feel that if it wasn’t for bad luck I would have no luck! I also found myself to be very popular with the local wildlife or small birds to be precise, they appeared to be starving. I had robins everywhere perching on my pole and carryall; they were joined by a wren and a few different species of finch. I have never been so popular with the birds as I was that day, mind it was all down to my generosity with a bag of old casters I had in my bag! Still it was nice to see them. I also had Phil Bonser at the next peg and next to him was Tony Williams. Phil reminded us of a match a few weeks ago when we drew in the same order and had a really good days fishing on Twin Oaks. I hoped for something similar but it was never going to be as good. I had a slight change of ground bait today as I wanted to try White Acres bagging mix and at the start I fed two balls on my 13m line. I had a quick 5 minutes with a double dead red maggot over the groundbait, just in case it immediately attracted something. But nothing happened, so I went out on the T bag with a pellet and later sweet corn hook bait. I had a bit of hope after around 10 minutes when the tip pulled around, but it was clearly a liner, I was annoyed with myself as I lifted the rod and struck. I never felt anything so hopefully no harm was done. In any event I never had another indication on the lead. I had a slight bit of excitement a little later on when I was fishing the long pole and I lost sight of my pole float and struck, but I think I literally did look in the wrong place. On the High Bank a few fish were now been caught, Steve Prouse, John Rennie and Tyrone Hull had each found a carp and Chris Hancock was starting to find the odd fish, including some nice bream on peg 14 which is practically opposite me. Overall most anglers were struggling and there were loads of blanks. Anyone for shopping? There was a bit of banter flying around and apart from no bites and the freezing cold it was an enjoyable start to the match. Before long Tony mentioned the only way he was going to get a bite was go to the local shops and buy a hot pork baguette with all the trimmings! This seemed like a really good idea to me, so for the next hour, I kept mentioning to him that it was the best idea he had ever had! Chris also joined in, after a short while the thought of it was too much and Tony was off to the shops! After 30 minutes I saw him returning which was my cue to pour a cup of coffee and have another go on the straight lead whilst I had the best bite of the day, and it was delicious! By now I think everybody had caught on the high bank and only the trio on our point were still biteless. I figured that it was big fish or bust after going around all my pole lines for the last time. So that is what I did whilst I tried the oldest trick in the book, pack up with the lead rod out! I never had a bite but in my view it was the correct thing to do. I possibly could have caught a fish late on the pole but a couple of roach would not have helped. With points decided on your position in the match it was a big one or nothing! 1st Chris HANCOCK 20lb 8oz 2nd Trevor CONROY 16lb 6oz 3rd Clint ELLIOTT 15lb 12oz 4th Steve PROWSE 13lb 6oz I have not received the full league table as yet so cannot publish the league. No doubt it will have changed quite a bit with Clint taking over the lead. There were quite a few blanks on the day including a few in the top ten. I was desperate to get out again before Christmas, mainly to get over blanking but the weather has had the last word on that and the midweek match has been cancelled. So that is it for me and 2010, I cannot wet a line until January as I am visiting family over the festive period. May I take this opportunity to wish everybody on behalf of all at Fishing4Fun a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, let’s hope that we all get our strings pulled on a regular basis in 2011.
