42 inch striped bass fishing light tackle TFO rods top water Crane Beach Ipswich MA 5/22/11

42 inch 25+ pound fish Catch & Release Striped bass top water Fishing MA Crane Beach Ipswich Essex 5/22/10 not the first fish of the year but the biggest year. Started my spring fishing with some nice striped bass riding the outgoing tide. This big striper Came up and gulped the jumping minnow down on the first cast. What made this fun was I the rod. I used a 3/8oz – 1oz Temple fork salmon pole 8’6″ or TFO rod. This was not as fat as your avg late season fish but at 25p it was fun fight on light tackle and even bent the vmc hooks. What you are experiencing is a very good tool that if handled right a competent can land very large fish and make fishing for smaller fish that more fun!

Fishing Report May 31,2011

We have been getting Chinook in quite a few different spots this last week including Inside South, Outside South Bank, Lighthouse Bank, Long Beach Bank and Great Bear. The fish seem to be moving around quite a bit and spots often change from day to day. We are mostly trolling the bottom with spoons and hutchies and getting both salmon and halibut in the same spots. Chinook are ranging from 10-20 lbs and seem to bite in spurts often coming in two at a time. Halibut have mostly been in the 12-40lb range while coming on the troll. We expect great things to continue for 2011 in the area of large Chinook (King) salmon. This year is going to see many 4-5 year salmon returning and we are excited. 4-5 year salmon often mean that you are getting more salmon in the 25-45lb range. This always makes the anticipation great! Halibut limits have been set to the same as last year at 1 per day and 2 as your carrying limit. Hopper magic

On our recent trip to Sterkfontein we found the Yellow’s were not really eating the conventional flies we always used. Well we had a surprise up our sleeve’s Notice the nylon loop tied in at the hook bend. Most of you are familiar with static nymphing for trout. One would suspend a team of nymphs ( flies) below a strike indicator or a high floating dry fly. Well with this loop , one would tie your team and the just loop to loop it to the BIG hopper. Some fish even had a go at the hopper! The end result!
